Born in South Africa, Maretha completed various music degrees at the University of Pretoria, with flute, piano and music theory as areas of specialization. After having lived and worked in England and Scotland for 8 years, she now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a proud South African-American. Maretha is currently enrolled in a Master of Arts degree (Composition) at California State University, East Bay, with Dr. Inés Thiebaut.

Teaching and playing instruments still bring her great joy! She believes in the transformative power of music and loves seeing her students' joy and enthusiasm develop as they grow as musicians. Her teaching style is based on proven western classical techniques, and she believes each student has the ability to make progress and more importantly, to make beautiful music.
